In the fine and bulk chemical industry and in the pharmaceutical and the food (supplements) processing industry solid particles are commonly made by crystallisation and precipitation. These solid particles are subject to increasingly stringent specifications set by the customer demands for further application. Specifications cover a range of product characteristics varying from the shape and size of the crystals, their size distribution, degree of agglomeration, impurity and solvent uptake, their polymorphic form and other related performance properties.
This course gives an overview of the characteristic features of crystallisation and precipitation processes, which are determined by the thermodynamics of the particular compound and the kinetic processes. Procedures are given to select the crystallisation method, the mode of operation and the process and mixing conditions.
Newly emerging crystallisation methods and techniques, that offer opportunities for novel products and better product characteristics, will be discussed.

The aim of this course is to teach the theoretical basics in conjunction with the practical know-how of industrial crystallisation and precipitation. Guidelines will be given to select the appropriate crystallisation method, the ideal mode of operation and the best suited equipment. You will gain a deeper understanding of the relationship between operating conditions and product quality. Also you will
